GOOD HOTEL GUIDE
2012
Amid magnificent scenery, this creeper-covered Georgian mansion is popular with fisherfolk in pursuit of salmon and sea trout. Facing Achill Island, it stands on the estuary of the River Newport, for which it owns extensive fishing rights. It is run by Thelma and Kieran Thompson, owners since 1985, and their manager, Catherine Flynn. It has long been liked by readers for the unstuffy atmosphere and the personal touch; many of the staff are local. The public rooms have fine plasterwork, chandeliers; a grand staircase with a lantern and dome lead to a gallery and the Regency drawing room which overlooks the garden and park. Eleven bedrooms are in the main house; five in converted courtyard houses are good for families, angling guests, and dog owners. In the formal dining room, the long-serving chef, John Gavin, has a sophisticated menu of country house/French dishes, perhaps chicken pâté, Cumberland sauce; Connemara scallops, garden spinach, white wine and vermouth sauce. A ghillie is available for fishing visitors; golfers have concessionary rates at the championship course at Westport.
