County Donegal

The most northerly of all counties lies in the Province of Ulster, and has by far and away the most beautiful scenery in Ireland. The 300 kilometres of coastline, housing some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe at Slieve League, hosts golden beaches, seaside resorts, rugged peninsulas, serene lakes and misty mountains.
County Donegal has it all.
At 110 kilometres in size, Glenveagh National Park is one of the largest in Ireland and a real must when visiting County Donegal. Situated in the north west of the county it has beautiful lakes and awe inspiring scenery, including the peaks of Slieve Snacht and Errigal. Set in the heart of Glenveagh National Park is Glenveagh Castle and visitor centre, where you can learn about the largest red deer population in Ireland and the re-introduction of the golden eagle to the park. The sense of remoteness and seclusion that it conveys to the visitor is possibly the most amazing feature of the Park. More information on Glenveagh National Park can be found on their website.

The Northern peninsula of Inishowen is best explored by day trip from Letterkenny, the largest town in County Donegal. A flourish of development in the town means that visitors are well catered for, with a staggering number of hotels and B&B’s, and a mass of bars, restaurants and clubs. The best way to see the peninsula is by driving the 157 kilometre round trip, which can be done in a day. Along the way expect to see the sandy beaches of Buncrana, fishing villages, lofty outlooks and glimpses of the Derryveagh Mountains to the west.
In addition to the walking which can be done at Glenveagh National Park there are excellent walks around the peninsula these can be found on the Walking in Ireland website.

Lifford is the county town of Donegal (not Donegal town, as many people think), and is a good base for exploring the south of the county. There is plenty of accommodation available and some fine restaurants for every budget.
Heading west from the town to the shore of Donegal Bay on the 50 kilometre trek to Glencomcille allows one to take in some of the county’s best viewpoints including Slieve League, St Johns Point - visit Castle Murray House Hotel & Restaurant for a an experience in fine dining,

One weekend each year the peace and tranquillity of the scenery is given over to the Donegal International Rally, which has been at the forefront of Irish Motorsport for the past 36 years. Won last year by Gareth McHale in the 06 Ford Focus WRC. The event boasts some of the world's best stages and this year takes place between 18th – 20th June.
